Pulsed plasma thruster, funded by NASA, could make one of the coolest space missions possible

NASA, as always, is exploring the next generation of thrusters to enable increasingly ambitious space missions. One idea currently moving to Phase II of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concept (NIAC) program is a Pulsed Plasma Rocket (PPR). The PPR “uses a fission-based nuclear power system to rapidly induce a phase change in a fuel projectile … Read more

Webb Space Telescope Cracks Case of Swollen Exoplanet “Microwave Marshmallow”.

The warm gas giant WASP-107 b, known for its unusually low density and moderate temperature, may have an inflated atmosphere due to tidal heating that warms its interior more than previously thought. (Artist’s concept.) Credit: SciTechDaily.com A surprising depletion of methane suggests that tidal heating has puffed up the atmosphere of warm gas giant WASP-107 … Read more

The James Webb Space Telescope may have solved a swollen planet mystery. Here’s how

A surprisingly low methane reservoir could explain how a planet around a nearby star became strangely bloated, according to new observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST(. The finding shows that planetary atmospheres can inflate to remarkable amounts without resorting to esoteric theories of planet formation, astronomers say. “The Webb data tells us that … Read more

Galacticare review: a crazy space sim in the Bullfrog tradition, with a great sense of humor

Crazy space station management sim Startopia and crazy hospital sim Theme Hospital are two of my favorite older games, so I was really happy with the concept of Galacticare, a crazy space station hospital management sim. And you know what? It is awesome! From the first reveals and previews, I thought it might happen at wacky, but the tone is right, has some really standout levels, and bugs in previous builds have been squashed (much like you can manually splatter little parasites that enter your hospital). I can see this becoming a go-to comfort game for me.

The Space Trash Signs project creates ‘constellations’ of debris to raise awareness of the problem of space debris (video)

an illustration of various constellations made from space debris

New ‘constellations’ above Earth, made from defunct satellites and old rocket parts, have been identified to draw attention to the ever-growing problem of space debris. The project is called Space Trash Signs and is the result of a collaboration between space sustainability company Privateer, German design agency Moby Digg, visual artist Frank Gräfe and communications … Read more

Eight micro interiors that make the most of their small space

For our latest lookbook, we’ve rounded up eight micro-apartments and micro-homes that use clever solutions to best fit into one room, which often functions as both a living room and a bedroom. A ‘sleeping cocoon’ and built-in space-saving furniture are among the solutions used to create comfortable living and sleeping spaces in these projects. The … Read more

James Webb Space Telescope sees the Orion Nebula in a stunning new light (images)

Three images of regions of the Orion Nebula captured by the JWST showing the familar star forming region in a vibrant new light

The Orion Nebula may be a well-known and well-studied celestial object, but new images from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) show this star-forming cloud of gas and dust in an incredibly new and vibrant light. The Orion Nebula, also known as “Messier 42” (M42), is located about 1,500 light-years from Earth toward the constellation … Read more
