The Canon R3 should always have been the R1

Two Canon DSLR cameras, the EOS R3 and EOS R1, placed side by side against a colorful cosmic background. Both cameras are shown without lenses, displaying their sensor openings. The R3 has a slightly bulkier design compared to the R1.

In this industry, perception is everything. Side by side, spec for spec, the Canon R1 is clearly improved over the R3, but not to the point where it feels like a completely different camera line. When it was unveiled in April 2021, the R3 felt entirely unexpected – at least in name. A camera like … Read more

The Canon R1 feels rushed, even with three extra years of development

A person with blurred facial features sits in the background, while two Canon EOS cameras, one smaller model (EOS R5) and one larger model (EOS-1D), are prominently displayed in the foreground on a wooden surface.

In some of PetaPixel‘s images of the Canon EOS R1, you may have noticed that the logo was not visible. In some cases this was because there was electrical tape covering it, which is common with pre-release hardware that is on public display. In other cases it was because the “R1” logo fell off. Moving the International Space Station into the Future

The International Space Station is the largest, most complex and most important element of space infrastructure ever deployed, and one of the most incredible engineering feats in human history. It is the result of an international, diplomatic initiative that reconciles the Western and Eastern worlds in space by combining the two space stations that had … Read more

Europe’s MiCA is finally here. How will the US respond?

The first wave of the European Union’s groundbreaking, comprehensive legislation on digital assets comes into effect on Sunday. With the Markets in Crypto-Asset Regulation framework, Europe has managed to do what other jurisdictions, including the US, are still avoiding: providing legal and regulatory clarity for not just one part of the digital asset market, but … Read more

Gangs of wild youth rule our streets. Even Waitrose isn’t safe

I spend a lot of time in my local Waitrose because I find it relaxing, even if I don’t buy much. It’s a kind of temple to soft British capitalism – that benign, eccentric mix of relatively high-quality food whose chemicals and packaging are kept in check by countless regulations, while the prices, no matter … Read more

The world is using more oil, coal and gas than ever before and will continue to do so. Net Zero is dead

A key point of consensus regarding global oil demand is the expectation that it will remain robust, driven by a combination of factors including economic recovery, increased travel and rising industrial activity in non-OECD countries. The only major body not seeing sustained, massive growth is the International Energy Agency (IEA), which revised its figures this … Read more

Four reasons why interest rates could stay higher for longer

The result is that even if nominal interest rates fall below the official 2% target in the coming months, as seems likely, they could pick up again later this year. This is already happening in the eurozone, where headline inflation, core inflation and services inflation all rose in May. Although the ECB has cut interest … Read more

Corporations and universities are getting rich by shifting the costs to the rest of us

If we discovered that a business leader had made his fortune not only by making a large profit on the goods or services he sold, but also by stealing the incomes and savings of innocent members of the public – people who had no connection whatsoever their company – we would be outraged. Demands would … Read more

Why we’re one step closer to understanding how Earth got its oceans (opinion)

photo showing earth against the blackness of space

Space enthusiasts will know: it’s easy to get caught up in a wealth of fascinating developments, from missions to the lunar surface to new discoveries in exoplanet science. But what really excites me as an astronomer right now is a largely overlooked development here on Earth that could have profound implications for how we explore … Read more
