An eight-year-old girl has become a TikTok sensation after brutally taking down an ice cream van selling two ice creams for £9.
Marnie, standing next to her identical twin sister Mylah in Burnley, Lancashire, says the seller is ‘getting nowhere’ with such high prices.
The youngster says to Aunt Karis Lambert, who is filming: “So there’s an ice cream van there selling two ice creams with two pieces of chewing gum in them for bloody nine pounds.”
Bewildered and with a strong Burnley accent, she says that you can buy an ice cream in her own street for £1 or £2 each.
However, the cost isn’t the only thing Marnie is surprised about.
She continues, “And all he does is bloody card!” Standing there with my money – bloody hell.”
Karis replies: ‘That’s bad, isn’t it?’ Marnie agrees, loudly adding, “I bet he can hear me,” as she and her sister walk away.
The video, filmed in Towneley Park, has been viewed 1.9 million times on TikTok and has attracted more than 30,000 comments, with Marnie being found particularly hilarious.
Several posters also agree that the ice creams in question are on the expensive side.
One, Lily, writes: ‘I’m with her on this, I wouldn’t stand for £9 either,’ to which Karis, who posted the video, replied: ‘When it came to £9 on screen I said to her: you really want it, she said not for that price no I’ll get one from the freezer when I get home’, followed by two crying laughing emojis.
Many of the comments comment on how much they like Marnie’s accent, while others say the girls resemble Harry Potter star Emma Watson.
Karis later told the Lancashire Post: ‘Marnie was really angry and wanted to vent it on Tik Tok and now it’s gone viral.’
Of the sisters, she said: “They look a bit like Ant and Dec. Marnie says what she thinks, while Mylah can be a bit quieter sometimes, but she’s the one who always comes out with the best one-liners.’
Although the video was posted as a light-hearted joke, the removal has left some ice cream sellers in despair, the Guardian reports.
One of them, John Taylor, whose C&M Ices van was crowned ‘Mobile Car of the Year 2023’, said rising costs have had a huge impact on ice cream van owners, meaning they have no choice but to raise prices increase.
John told the newspaper: “It’s not just our industry. Every sector is in the same boat. The problem is that everyone sees us as a cheap product.’
“Everyone seems to think ice cream should cost 50p or £1,” which he said were 1970s prices.
‘They’re happy to pay £4 for a lukewarm Starbucks coffee, but not a few quid for a quality ice cream.’
He said various cost increases, including those for diesel, electricity, insurance, camping fees and wages, have led to double-digit price increases for several years in a row.
John explained that sundae owners don’t have the power of a supermarket, which can, for example, buy 1,000 pallets of Magnums at a lower price.
He added that £4.50 for an ice cream was at the top end of the market but not ‘unreasonable’.
