The Monday Letters page is struggling to understand the logic behind the PSVR2 because a reader doesn’t want to replay Gex and Bubsy Bobcat.

Beyond infinity
We all know how Capcom loves a good crossover and now that they have the Marvel license back, it may really be that long before we see a new Marvel Vs. Capcom? Infinite wasn’t well received, but it had a low budget and was held back because Marvel didn’t own the Fox film rights at the time. But now they do, so not only could it include X-Men, but Marvel will probably push for it too.
So you can have Wolverine, Cyclops, Cable, Magneto, Colossus, Gambit, Iceman, Juggernaut, Psylocke, Rogue, Sabertooth, Sentinel, Storm and all the others that appeared in the original games.
But there are also a lot of characters who have come and gone in popularity over the past 25 years, so I would expect Deadpool, Phoenix, and X-23 to see a sequel in Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and then maybe Magik, Mystique, Armor, Bishop, Sync and Kid Omega.
The Capcom side is simpler, but I hope they delve into older games as well as new ones. I’m sure there’s a way they can flesh out characters from 1942, Commando, or Forgotten Worlds. I love it when Capcom gets unclear and I hope they can go all out with a new game if that happens.

Limited interest
I was looking at the new games announced for the physical editions of Limited Run Games and some of the choices are so bizarre to me. Do enough people really like Gex and Bubsy to want to buy hyper-expensive port compilations? I thought Bubsy Bobcat was literally a joke, as the very worst of the Sonic wannabe animal mascots?
I realize nostalgia is a thing, but this seems to be taking it to the extreme. I remember playing some of these games in the 90s and they were terrible back then, so I’d hate to think about how they play now.
I don’t think it hurts anyone, but I often wish people were as passionate about playing new and original games as they are about the crap they bought as a kid. Nostalgia is a drug and many drugs are bad for you.

A is A
Here’s an interesting point of pedantry: is Metroid Prime a first person shooter? Obviously the 2D games are Metroidvanias, hence the name, but I don’t think anyone watching the trailer for 4 would assume it was anything other than a shooter. Those who’ve played the other games know this isn’t true, but just calling it a Metroidvania seems a bit inadequate.
I’m honestly surprised that genre labels have lasted this long, because in many cases they are clearly no longer relevant. You hardly encounter them in films. Maybe specific things like comedy and horror, but everything else is exactly what it is.
Gorf
GC: We wouldn’t call it a first person shooter. Shooting is not the focus and you hardly have to aim.

Day anytime
There are two games I want this year. This is the first time I’ve only purchased two games in a twelve month period. The first has to be Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but I won’t be buying it on day one like I normally do. I’m waiting a few months, not because I can’t afford it yet, but I’m tired of buying them for £70 on the first day and a few weeks later they’re half price or better, which to me is a joke . If some players finish it before it’s out, the price could drop even faster, so I’ll wait for that.
The second is Astro Bot. I love the demo, or whatever it was called, that you get for free with the PlayStation 5, but I hope Sony lowers the price, which they honestly never do for their own games.
I don’t have any problem with Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6. I had played it before because it’s Call Of DUty with a different skin and next year it’s GTA 6 and I really can’t wait for that game. It’s going to be huge and the sales will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Dare I say it: £2 billion in sales within the first 48 hours. I think I would pay $100 for that game.

GC: Astro’s Playroom wasn’t a demo, but elements of it will likely be similar to the new game.
Strange priorities
I saw your article about Sony ending support for PlayStation VR2. I don’t understand the logic, both business and game wise. You spend a fortune to make, from what I’ve seen, a really good machine, but you don’t support it with games.
They did the same with the handheld industry; they were brilliant, fantastic screens and great games, but in no time the games just stopped. It seems like financial madness, if that’s your vision why make them at all?
TWO MACKEN
GC: It’s a mystery. The early dumping of the PS Vita can be attributed to disagreements between Sony Japan and America, but why Sony prioritized the PlayStation VR2 so early in the PlayStation 5’s life, with no plans for first party games post-launch, is anyone’s guess. .
Bite the bullet
Interesting Reader’s Feature this weekend, about the Xbox 360 as the pinnacle of gaming. I certainly have a lot of nostalgia for the console, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who is happy that games have become even more realistic and complex since then. However, as the reader notes, this comes at a cost that may not be sustainable.
The problem is: what is the solution? To artificially keep all consoles at the same power as the Xbox 360 or slightly above? No one is going to do that, especially not at competing companies. The second Microsoft or Sony releases a lower-powered machine, the other will do the opposite, which is partly what happened with the Xbox One and its ridiculous Kinect obsession.
The fact that Nintendo is sitting there proving that it can absolutely work to keep things the same (there was very little improvement from the GameCube to the Wii, so they’re at least a generation behind since then) doesn’t seem to matter. It should, but I don’t see Xbox or PlayStation doing it.
There are so many ways out of the current situation, but no one seems willing to make the big decisions and it feels like they are just making things worse by putting things off.

A year later
RE: Crime Boss: Rocky City. After GameCentral’s 3/10 score, the game has had many updates and is now a lot of fun. To make things even better, all DLC is now free on all platforms for a limited time.
The only downside is that you have to restart the game.

Short challenge
Since there’s so much talk about live service games right now, I thought I’d mention my experience with Ubisoft’s XDefiant, which I initially thought was a really nice alternative to Call Of Duty and now… I’ve had it for a week Not played and probably never will return to it. There’s nothing wrong with it, but while it’s similar to Call Of Duty, it’s not necessarily better than it in any way.
Because Call Of Duty is such a known quantity, it not only means that you know where you stand, but that you’re already somewhat in the ecosystem and not starting from scratch. I think this is why things like Helldivers 2, Palworld and XDefiant fell off so much after a few months. They’re decent, but they’re not world beaters and they feel more like distractions from other, bigger games.
Fortnite and Apex Legends and whatnot aren’t necessarily better games, but they’re so well established that no one is going to stop playing them for any serious amount of time in favor of something that isn’t significantly better. That’s why we see these live service games do well for a few months and then fall away.
And does anyone think Concord will get better? Can anyone see themselves playing that by the end of the year, let alone 2034? If I were a developer, the last thing I’d want to work on would be a live-service game, not only because it’s probably not what I got into gaming for, but because the chances of it being a hit are so slim.

I like it when developers congratulate each other for doing a good job. I can really see CD Projekt and FromSoftware working well together too, if they were to do some sort of joint project. Maybe some new DLC?
Authentic
Just to point out that it was the 25e birthday of Ape Escape last week. The only positive thing I can say is that there will probably be a reference to it in the new Astro Bot?
