Passengers were hit by rush hour travel chaos after a train line to London Euston was closed following a chemical spill.
Trains to London Euston have been canceled or delayed at peak times today due to a chemical spill near Crewe.
The major disruption lasted until midday after a safety inspection near Crewe closed the tracks shortly before 6am.
The inspection of a track in Crewe blocked all lines on the route, National Rail warned.
London Northwestern Railway told passengers that the tracks were closed ‘due to a chemical spill.’
Although lines reopened at around 7.30am, services may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised as trains deal with the impact into the afternoon.
Paul Owen, Network Rail’s operations director for the North West route, said: ‘We are working closely with the emergency services and train companies following a minor incident involving a freight train.
“Our priority is to always get services back up and running safely, so passengers and freight users can get where they need to go.
‘While the network has been restored across the Crewe area, we urge people to check the latest travel information with their train company or with National Rail Inquiries.’
