‘Shame’, ‘mess’: Readers slam new Denbighshire waste collection system

The council’s new Trolibocs system, which collects paper, plastic, metal, food cartons and glass, was introduced nationwide on June 3.

Residents are now required to separate their ‘dry’ recycling using a three-tier ‘Trolibocs’ service, which has been delivered to households since February.

The council expects residents to separate items themselves to help reduce costs, with a weighted burlap bag used for cardboard.

‘Emergency meeting’ of the city council due to complaints about waste collection

The council has apologized as residents of Denbighshire face waste problems

However, the council has apologized several times after residents across the province complained that their waste was being missed by collectors, with several weeks waiting for bins to be collected.

Dissatisfaction with the system prompted an ’emergency meeting’ of the council yesterday, during which some council members also expressed their dissatisfaction with the ‘bad’ plan.

Here’s how readers reacted this week:

June Williams

“We need the old system back, please go back to the old bins.”

Martin Anthony

“This just shows DCC’s incompetence. There are other areas and municipalities that said it didn’t work and went back to the original way of just using the large bins.

“More taxpayer money is being wasted.”

Mellymoo Sunnysan

“Ours wasn’t picked up last Friday. Now hoping for tomorrow. I have filed a complaint with DCC. It is an absolute shame that we are told there is a staffing problem, but it has been five years of planning (their words).”

Mark Powell

“There was nothing wrong with the old system – why didn’t they introduce another bin like the old one.”

Ellen Fraser

“Why fix something that isn’t broken! So far it’s a mess.”

David Easton

“Two weeks later and still waiting for ours to be emptied.”

Tania Powell:

“20 miles per hour was imposed on drivers and this disorderly system was imposed on the people.”

Charles Carmichael

“Our bins have not been emptied in the past two weeks and a lot has piled up in the kitchen again.”

Keith Vaughan

“Mine are still outside now because no one collected the bins in our street yesterday, absolutely joking.”

Matthew Thomas

“I called Denbighshire earlier to say my bins hadn’t been collected. All I get is: oh sorry, you must have been missed.”

Beverly Jane Camm

“I’m still waiting for our blue bin to be emptied. New ones were done last week, along with food waste. It is the waste collectors that I feel for, they must receive so much aggression from the public.’

Geraldine Garrod

“My bins have not been emptied since the new scheme started. Food caddy not emptied in three weeks. How long will it take for rats to find this new food source.”

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council apologized on behalf of the authority, citing ‘teething problems’.

“We are still experiencing some teething problems with the rollout of our new recycling service,” she says.

“Unfortunately, with any operational change of this magnitude there will always be some unexpected issues.

“We remain confident that this will diminish over time and that the service will return to the level of reliability we have come to expect in Denbighshire.

“We know this is of no comfort to anyone who has recently had a missed collection, but we do expect this to be a short-term issue and to improve over the coming weeks. However, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused by missed collections.

“We encourage people to use our online missed collections form as it is the most effective and efficient way to pass that information on to our operations team https://www.denbighshire.gov.uk/en/bins- and-recycling/ report-a-missed-waste-collection.aspx

He added: “We would like to reassure residents that we are taking these issues very seriously and we are doing everything we can to get the new service up and running as quickly as possible.

“We would like to thank all residents for their patience as our crews adapt to the new service. We would also like to thank residents for their continued efforts with the new recycling system.

“It is already clear that the quality of recycling from our collections has been very good, with very little contamination.

“We therefore remain confident that this new system will help us improve our recycling rates and achieve the new legal target of recycling 70% of household waste.”
