Games Inbox: What Would The Elder Scrolls 6: Hammerfell Look Like?

What will the new game look like? (Bethesda)

Monday’s letters page discusses the appeal of Nintendo World Championships and speedrunning, while a reader laments the end of the Halo TV series.

The three pillars
The internet detective angle is getting pretty crazy with some fans, but I can’t deny that the evidence that The Elder Scrolls 6 is set in Hammerfell is pretty definitive. I haven’t played anything other than Oblivion or Skyrim, so I don’t have an opinion on it, but if it has a lot of different locations, that sounds good to me. Skyrim wasn’t exactly the most varied place to visit, so I’d appreciate an improvement on that level.

Beyond that, I don’t really know what to expect from the new game, especially since Starfield didn’t really manage to improve on anything. Better first person combat, sure, but for me, the thing that makes Skyrim so impressive is the immersion, the customizability, and the detail and hidden areas of the world.

Improving on these three pillars is the most important, in my opinion, not only compared to Skyrim but to everything that has come since. It still feels like Skyrim does some things better than many more recent games, but the question now is, can even Bethesda beat it?

The curse of Nintendo
I definitely like the idea of a Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake for the Switch 2 launch, but I feel like as soon as you make a prediction Nintendo has to do something that basically guarantees it’s not going to happen. It’s like a curse or something, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen it come to fruition, even for basic things that should be easy to guess.

I agree that Nintendo wants some sort of Zelda game for launch, but I agree that it won’t be Breath Of The Wild – for the simple reason that that was the launch game for the Switch and it might be confusing for casual gamers as to whether the Switch 2 is even new if it launches with the same game. Unless it’s just promoted as a remaster upgrade and not really anything special, but that doesn’t sound very Nintendo-like.

But that brings you right back to what game it’s going to be, and I’ll admit I don’t know. But that’s what makes the Switch 2 so exciting. I like not knowing.

Cher warned you
As we all knew at the time, even Xbox fans, the FTC was right and the Activision Blizzard acquisition should never have happened. In fact, I think Xbox fans are the ones who regret it the most, because it’s becoming clear what it really means for the format.

The problem is, you can’t turn back time. I’m not a lawyer, but I’m assuming the FTC can’t overturn the acquisition, so what’s the worst case scenario? A fine? Something that forces Microsoft to lay off even more people?

The worst part is that none of this seems to have helped Xbox at all, unless you think they needed something to push them to go more multiformat, which you could argue. But it all seems like a big mess to me.

Fast vs Slow
I have no intention of buying Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, but I am strangely fascinated by it because it goes so far beyond anything I would ever be interested in. I find speedruns to be a very strange way to enjoy a game, and I find them very boring to watch.

To me it’s like you’re deliberately destroying the game and trying to get it over with as quickly as possible. I realize I’m underplaying them here, but it’s so completely antithetical to how I try to enjoy games that I have a hard time believing there are people who prefer it this way.

I also don’t know where they find the free time to become so good at one particular game. I would much rather use that time to play something else. But do what you want.

Konamivania
Doesn’t anyone else think it’s crazy that Konami still hasn’t even hinted at a new Castlevania game? I really don’t get why they’re putting all this effort into new Silent Hill games when Castlevania is so much more famous.

I don’t think Castlevania is a huge seller in the modern world either, but at least non-gamers have heard of it, if only through the Netflix series. I remember there were rumors of a big budget game a while back, but nothing ever came of it. If I were Konami, I’d just sell my video games to someone else.

They’ll never have enough money to make another Metal Gear game, so what’s the point?

Global apocalypse
I’m really looking forward to Fallout London and I hope it encourages even more mods on a similar scale, especially if Bethesda officially endorses them. For me the most obvious location is Russia, but from looking around there doesn’t seem to be any planned at the moment. I found an old one called New Moscow on Nexus Mods, but I don’t think it’s very good.

I really think Bethesda was wrong when they said Fallout would never take place outside the US. This isn’t GTA, where the whole point is to satirize American culture. I think Bethesda thinks that, but I never would have considered it if they hadn’t mentioned it.

For me, Fallout is about what happens after a nuclear apocalypse. It’s the attempt to reboot civilization and the different routes people take. None of that is unique to the US. It’s actually more interesting when you look at how different cultures deal with the same issues.

Setting new Fallout sequels in increasingly obscure American cities seems like such a waste of the concept. Where is Fallout 8 going to be set? Somewhere I’ve never heard of, I guess.

Everyone vs Capcom
I loved the Reader’s Feature with all the Vs. Capcom ideas. I can’t see them all happening, but I’d like to see them all. One thing he didn’t mention though was the idea of a Capcom Vs. The World game, in terms of rival fighting games.

I know we’ll never get Mortal Kombat, but we could have Street Fighter Vs. Tekken Vs. SNK Vs. Sega Vs. Arc System Works Vs. French-Bread. I think that would be awesome and since fighting games are inherently niche, it could be organized more easily than other types of games, I imagine.

Rare release
I was pretty upset about the success of Sea Of Thieves on PlayStation 5. Not because of any console war nonsense, but because it seemed to diminish the chances of a new game from Rare. I know they announced Everwild, but I don’t see that ever happening and the devs seem to have admitted it was just a vague idea that never actually existed as a game.

The fact that they haven’t released a new game in 6 years really annoys me, because I enjoyed their games so much during the N64 era. I know a lot of people have moved on since then and they’re literally not the same company anymore, but the name still means something to me and as far as I know they’re still one of the biggest developers in the UK.

It’s really annoying to see it all go to waste in a multiplayer-only online game. New ideas would be better, but I certainly wouldn’t mind a new Blast Corps, Banjo-Kazooie or Conker. I also thought Microsoft would want to encourage one of the few companies that would ever come close to Nintendo when it comes to making 3D platformers, but nothing happened.

I hope Rare is happy with what they’re doing now, but it’s hard to imagine that given how famous and popular they were back in the day, and how most people who play Sea Of Thieves probably don’t even know who they are. It’s a case of success being a double-edged sword in my opinion.

I see that Paramount has cancelled the Halo live action series after two seasons. While the first one was average, I really enjoyed the second one and the special effects were much better, as was the story, and I was looking forward to the continuation of the story.
TWO MACKS

Main class: There’s talk of another network airing the series for Season 3, but we’re not sure how likely that is.

I rarely buy DLC, once in a blue moon, but the Shadow Of The Erdtree DLC is comparable to the XCOM 2: War Of The Chosen DLC. Great games, both further refined by passionate developers.
