What are connections?

Connections is a word puzzle game published daily by the NYT, hosts of the endlessly popular Wordle puzzle. Created daily by crossword puzzle creator Wyna Liu, Connections presents you with a selection of 16 seemingly disparate words, which you must group into four sets of four, with each group of four words sharing a common theme.

For example, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter”, and “Wendy” are all Peter Pan characters. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go”, and “Stick” are all words that often appear just before the word “Figure”.

Your task is to figure out what these themes are that connect the different words – but be careful, because there are often red herring connections that are deliberately put in there to throw you off! To win the game, you must find all four connections without making 4 mistakes. On your fourth mistake, the game is over and the answer is automatically revealed.

Each of the four groups in each day’s Connections puzzle is also assigned a different color, indicating how easy or difficult the Connection is to find. These colors are: Yellow (easiest), Green (easiest), Blue (medium), and Purple (hardest).
