The current Helldivers 2 Major Order has been an interesting one. The first few days seemed suspiciously easy, with little to do to keep X-45 under Super Earth control. Then a Strategic Alert diverted our attention to another sector, allowing the Automatons to attempt to retake the new jungle planet. That didn’t last long though, and it was successfully liberated once again.
After the defense, another Strategic Alert was sent out, revealing a weapons cache containing the Commando Rocket Launcher. This is the quad missile launcher that was leaked after the Viper Commandos Warbond and is based on the iconic weapon used by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the Commando film.
The Strategic Alert Message announced that the weapon would be available for use on X-45 for the remainder of the Major Order, before being released with the message:
“The Advanced Weapons Lab excavation on X-45 has recovered an intact cache of a lost Support Weapon from the First Galactic War: the MLS-4X Commando Rocket Launcher. These weapons will be immediately deployed in defense of the planet. All operations in defense of X-45 will be augmented by the MLS-4X Commando until the end of the current Order.”
Unfortunately, with X-45 successfully defended and at 100%, there is no way to use the weapon until the Major Order ends. Once it ends in less than 24 hours, the Commando Rocket Launcher will become available to unlock through your ship’s Stratagems section using Requisition Slips. Until then, if the planet comes under attack from the Automatons again, players can jump in and check out the new weapon. Many players are hoping that the robot army still has one more fight in it, as the Commando Rocket Launcher has been a hit so far.
Players took to Reddit to share their thoughts on the new Commando Rocket Launcher coming to Helldivers 2, with U/Marketplacehero saying: “This was a pleasant surprise. Thought they were giving us the spear, but got a brand new weapon instead. Destroys manifolds, but costs two shots to take down towers. I did notice that when I picked up ammo it wouldn’t reload. I think it replaces the EAT-17 if you compare the call in times and the amount of rockets you get.”
It seems to do less damage than the EAT-17. But with four missiles it could become more useful and a go-to Stratagem for players, since you can use it on multiple targets. This is one reason I use the Recoilless Rifle, but this could serve as a replacement.
U/Nami_Makes_Me_Wet shared some tips and strategies for the Commando Rocket Launcher and why it might become part of the Helldivers 2 meta in the future. “The individual rockets seem to do less damage than the Spear, but since you can fire four of them rapidly and they have better lock-on (allowing you to target weak spots so you can hit walkers in the face and dropships in the engine) the overall output seems better. The targeting also means you can probably hit chargers much more reliably than spear, same goes for bile titans faces,” they said.
“Four shots is also enough to clear most bot bases, especially since you don’t have to open huts or destroy medium-sized bug hives. That means you only need one teammate or a few eagles to get the job done.”
It’ll be interesting to see how the Commando Rocket Launcher fares in various missions against both the Automatons and the Terminids, but so far it seems incredibly promising. I’m sure many players are glad that it’s not the Anti-Tank Mines that Arrowhead Game Studios has been trying to give the community for months.
