Police incident near city centre as officers cordon off area – updates

Police have closed off a section of road in Birmingham due to an incident taking place this afternoon. Uniformed officers are at the scene in Shadwell Street.

Footage taken at around 12.30pm today, 8th July, shows uniformed officers and a marked police car manning the area. A blue and white police cordon has been placed across a section of the road, near Princip Street, to block public access.




West Midlands Police said they were called to Shadwell Street shortly before 11am. Police said officers were “working to resolve the incident” and a small cordon had been put in place in the meantime.

The ribbon hangs across the front of the William Booth Centre, a Salvation Army support centre that helps the city’s homeless.

‘Cases resolved safely,’ police say

Police have confirmed the man made it safely from the roof of the William Booth Centre and has been referred for help.

A police spokesman said:

The man has now come down and the matter has been dealt with safely.

He has since been referred to mental health professionals.

Police concerned after ‘man on roof of homeless shelter’

Police were called to Shadwell Street this morning after “concerns were raised for the welfare of a man on the roof” of the William Booth Centre, we can confirm.

Officers set up a small cordon as they worked to resolve the incident. Fortunately, the incident has now been safely resolved.

Three-hour police cordon

Uniformed police are believed to have been at the scene for three hours now. Officers were called to the incident in Shadwell Street at 10.50am this morning.

A cordon was put in place around the William Booth Centre, a homeless shelter, which remains in place today.

‘Large police presence’

Police have cordoned off the end of William Booth Lane and a larger section of Shadwell Street, our reporter on the scene says. There is a heavy police presence on Shadwell Street, outside the William Booth Centre, and the cordon runs for about 15 metres.

Incident at homeless shelter

The incident is happening at the William Booth Centre on Shadwell Street, near where the road intersects with Princip Street. Police were called to the street at 10.50am and have since cordoned off a small section of road in front of the homeless shelter.
