Sometimes I think I’m the only one happy with my PS5

Are people too negative about the PS5? (Sony)

One reader is annoyed by the constant bad news about gaming and admits he’s been very happy with the PS5 so far.

It’s getting harder and harder to be positive about the games industry right now. Even if it’s proven to be a great year for games, and the rest of the year looks good too. I realize there are big issues with layoffs, and I’m not being heartless about it, but at the same time, there’s nothing I can do about it – except buy their games and play them, so they don’t get fired for flops.

I bought my PlayStation 5 in early 2021 and have been very happy with it since day one. It came with Demon’s Souls and Spider-Man: Miles Morales and they were both excellent in very different ways. Astro’s Playroom was an unexpected (and free) bonus and it was also very good, one of the best launch games I’ve ever played.

I got Returnal a few months later and it was even better. I’ve heard people say the graphics could have been better on the PlayStation 4, but whether that’s true or not, it’s one of the best games I’ve played in a long time and a very clever mix of third person shooter, bullet hell and roguelike.

The next game I got was Horizon Forbidden West, which to this day has the best graphics I’ve ever seen in a game. Yes, the gameplay isn’t that great in comparison, but it’s not bad and I didn’t find it too easy.

From there I went to God Of War Ragnarök, which was just as good as the previous game and very emotional at the end. And to catch me up, I got Helldivers 2 this year, which was and remains excellent.

Of course, this is in addition to non-exclusive third-party games, and there are other exclusive games that have been reviewed very well but don’t appeal to me. (I’ve never liked Final Fantasy, and Stellar Blade isn’t really my thing – although I might give it a shot if it’s cheap.)

My point is that I think this is a very good lineup of games for the first three years and that’s just what I happened to play, not the sum total of everything available. I realize the schedules have slowed down a lot lately, but it’s not like they’ve stopped, with Sony sensibly filling in the gaps with paid exclusives.

I’m not trying to downplay the problems in the gaming industry, but I admit I barely understand them and I can assure you that average consumers have no idea it’s even happening. Will the PlayStation 5 go down in history as the best console of all time? I don’t know, probably not. But that seems like a pretty extreme expectation.

As far as I’m concerned, it’s a very successful sequel for the PlayStation 5 and I’m already looking forward to Astro Bot and, based on Helldivers 2, Concord.

I really hope the games industry gets itself sorted out, but when it comes to the variety of fun games I can play that also offer great value for my money, I have no complaints about the PlayStation 5 at all.
