As we’ve been reporting for the past few weeks, Canon has finally — and officially — launched two exciting new full-frame mirrorless cameras. Promising to “lead the way,” the new Canon EOS R1 will serve as the brand’s new flagship mirrorless camera, featuring a massive 24.2-megapixel full-frame sensor and 6K RAW video recording.
Canon also unveiled the new EOS R5 Mark II, which is designed to be extremely versatile for all types of content creators, photographers and video journalists. The camera features a 45-megapixel full-frame sensor and can record 8K 60 Raw/4K 60 SRAW/4K 120 10-bit video.
Let’s take a look at these two major new Canon cameras and find out what you need to know about them now. (We’ll undoubtedly learn a lot more about both in the coming days and weeks.)
Introducing the Canon EOS R1
Canon’s latest flagship model, the EOS R1, is designed to deliver speed, precision and reliability, and is built for photojournalists, sports photographers, wildlife photographers and other image-makers who, as Canon puts it, “can’t miss the moment”.
As the new flagship of the company’s EOS R line, the R1 will feature a full-frame 24MP BSI stacked sensor, DIGIC Accelerator processing, next-gen Dual Pixel Intelligent AF and the robust design you’d expect from a professional workhorse.
While the R1 will indeed be great for stills, it will also tout strong video capabilities and support integrated workflow with Cinema EOS shooters. The R1 will be capable of recording up to 6K 60p raw footage, or 4K 60p MP4 footage with a 6K oversampling area at 10-bit 4:2:2 sampling.
Proxy recording is also possible, which speeds up post-production by splitting two separate recording formats across separate memory cards. For example, you could record a 6K 60p RAW version to one card and a DCI 2K 60p MP4 version to the other. This allows you to edit and grade the lower bitrate footage, then apply your edits to the higher bitrate version when you’re ready.

- 24MP Full-Frame Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor

Introducing the Canon EOS R5 Mark II
In addition to the new flagship R1, Canon also introduced a new version of its popular R5 camera with the EOS R5 Mark II. This updated version should pack enough horsepower to push Canon’s highest resolution mirrorless sensor to a blistering 30fps and capture 8K60p raw video.
The EOS R5 Mark II mirrorless camera is also the solution for multimedia professionals in terms of versatility, image quality and intelligence. It features an all-new 45MP sensor with a stacked, back-illuminated design and a brand new processor that delivers improvements in almost every category. It’s an all-rounder that gets the job done.
The new R5 Mark II also inherits many of the innovations that made its sibling, the R5 C, a favourite among combination video-stills shooters, and adopts much of the feature set and workflow of its Cinema EOS cousin. Like its predecessors, the 45MP full-frame sensor enables impressively high-resolution DCI 8K raw video recording internally, now at up to 60fps, along with 4K SRAW also across the full width of the sensor.
Here are the full specs and purchasing options:
- 45MP Full-Frame Stacked BSI CMOS Sensor
