Is Concord on PS5 worth playing?

Concord – What did you think? (YouTube)

Almost recommended
I just wanted to give my verdict on Concord after playing it over the weekend and into Monday. I’d say I mostly agree with GC’s review, although not necessarily in terms of which characters were my favorites. I hated all the aliens so I’m glad there aren’t any more, and I actually really liked Haymar.

The game clearly isn’t original, or even trying to be, but I think it’s a bit pointless to focus on that given the state of most other games and sequels. I think it’s especially disappointing when a brand new franchise just copies something, but even then this is still more imaginative, within its limits, than Valorant or XDefiant.

For me, the question is how good is good enough. The game is fun and well made, but at the same time it’s not world class. If it was free that wouldn’t be a problem, but it’s not, so you have to decide if it’s worth playing and if it’s worth the investment of both money and time. Even as someone who enjoyed it last weekend, I’m not sure.

The beta was perhaps too generous, because now that I’ve played all the characters, I don’t know what I’m looking forward to in the main game. The story? Not so much. I think Sony has a big job ahead of them, selling it.

Friends of Rockstar
I see there are rumors about GTA+ coming to Switch, but what do people think this could actually mean? With these kinds of things it’s always the boring answer, so it’s probably just because Red Dead Redemption is on Switch, but what if this was Rockstar gearing up for Switch 2?

I can’t imagine any scenario where GTA 6 could possibly work on the new console, but what if Rockstar made something new for Nintendo like they did with Chinatown Wars? Or maybe they have a version of GTA 5 that’s in the works? It’s still basically an Xbox 360 game, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Rockstar and Nintendo work better together than some people realize, so I’d love to see them work together again.

Complete horror
I see that Lara Croft is in Dead By Daylight now, which I find a little odd since none of her games are survival horrors. There was a bit of that in the first reboot, and I think even the early games had tense elements to them, but it seems odd to me that she’s constantly associated with horror stuff, but none of her games really go for it.

I know the original reboot was a much more explicit horror game that got watered down to what we got, but if people are so excited about the idea, maybe it’s time to go for a full-fledged survival horror? It would certainly make more sense to turn Tomb Raider into that rather than the ultra violent stealth/shooter that the final trilogy became.

Surprising hit
There may not be any big names out at the moment, but it’s a pretty good time for indies right now, judging by GC’s reviews of Gestalt: Steam & Cinder and SChiM – both of which look interesting. I’m also bullish on Dungeons Of Hinterberg, Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure and Thrasher. I’m guessing GC will review those as well.

Hopefully there are many more that I haven’t heard of yet, because I find one of the joys of indie games is that they come out of nowhere and are awesome and weird. I certainly never imagined that Balatro would become one of my favorite games of the year and yet I was obsessed with it for months. Let’s hope 2024 holds more indie surprises.

Main class: We should revise those, yes.

Internet Detective
To add a little more to the rumor mill, and I know you’ll love this absurd addition to my ‘Who is Emio?’ theory.

Looking at the trailer again, it’s abundantly clear that the reason our enigmatic character has one hand hidden behind his back in the paper bag is to hide the game’s unique selling point.

Nintendo’s Vitality Sensor plays a key role in solving the case in this murder mystery.

You can lie, but you can’t hide.
Bad editing

Main class: To be serious, recent rumors suggest that it could be part of the Famicom Detective Club series and not necessarily anything to do with Bloober Team.

Unstable studios
I’ve heard some rumors, probably made up, that Rocksteady is planning to repurpose some of Suicide Squad’s stuff to make a new game where this time you play as the Justice League and try to make amends with people. It’s nice that the first step isn’t to close the studio, but I just can’t imagine that working.

I didn’t like anything about Suicide Squad: not the gameplay, not the visuals, and not the story or the way they did the characters. I don’t know if Rocksteady just lost interest in the DC universe or if too many of the original crew have left, but this was almost unrecognizable from the Batman games they used to make.

In my opinion it would be wise to let them make their own new and original game, but the problem with budgets and everything these days is that even if Warner wanted them, it’s such a huge risk. Now Rocksteady is stuck making lame comic book games, which they don’t seem to be into anymore, until they eventually shut down. It’s a real shame.

This time it’s war
Aliens: Dark Descent is available now for PlayStation 5.

I re-read your review from last year, where you said it had a lot of bugs, but that the PlayStation 5 version might be better.

Would you rate it higher now? I assume a lot of bugs have been fixed by now, but I doubt they’ve added more dialogue and music to the game.
raving

Main class: We haven’t played it since launch, but we understand from others that the bugs have been fixed. Even if they weren’t, it’s still worth picking up on sale, especially if you’re an Aliens fan.

Serious choices
I’m not sure how serious people were when they said they hoped there would be a new Marvel Vs. Capcom, but with the new compilation and the Marvel movies picking up steam again, I don’t think there’s been a better opportunity in years, assuming we brush aside all of Sony’s legal complications until we know better.

So what are people’s serious expectations for new characters? Multiple Fantastic Four characters are a given, with that movie coming, but I don’t know how many new X-Men characters they’d have, outside of the legacy characters, since it’s still a few years before Marvel gets around to that (I think there’s a Comic-Con reveal expected for their film slate?).

I think we’d probably also get Doctor Strange, Miles Morales, Loki, maybe Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Moon Knight and Scarlet Witch. But who knows, because Capcom likes to pick some really obscure characters. I have no idea where Shuma-Gorath came from in the original – he’s an interdimensional god, not a little green octopus!

As for the Capcom side of things, I think Lady Dimitrescu is a sure thing, as well as one or two new characters from Street Fighter 6, which unfortunately probably includes Luke. There would probably be a Monster Hunter avatar (can’t believe there wasn’t one in Infinite) and then I’d love to see Gene from God Hand and Falco from Power Stone (I think we might as well get Squirrel Girl from Marvel as well, for GC, even though I don’t know who she is).

I would also like to see some other obscure Capcom choices, like old school Bionic Commando and Regina from Dino Crisis. And then get really obscure, like someone from Knights Of The Round or Forbidden Worlds. I have always loved those games and the more obscure the characters the better.
Boring

Main class: After launch, a monster hunter was added as DLC.

The Sims is one of those franchises that I wish another company owned. I used to love that game, but EA is so bad at running it that I’m not surprised The Sims 5 has problems.
Kora

John Bercow in Fallout London? I suddenly really, really wish I had a gaming PC. As the other reader said, what will Bethesda do if this turns out to be better than the official games? It’s not like Fallout 4 was great to begin with.
