New Fallout game released today by fans as London mod gets closer to release

Fallout: London – It’s a Lot Closer to Release Than Fallout 5 (Team FOLON)

There may be no sign of Fallout 5 isn’t out yet, but a fan version of Van Buren just released and Fallout: London seems just a few days away.

There’s just one problem with the overwhelming success of the Fallout TV series on Amazon: there isn’t a new game coming out to coincide with the series and that probably won’t be for a few more years, especially if it’s Fallout 5.

Even the rumors about remakes and remasters of older games are pretty vague, leaving nothing new to look forward to. But thankfully, fans have their act together, with two major new mods on the way that have the potential to be just as big as an official release.

The fan-made Fallout: London has been anticipated for years, but Fallout Yesterday – Van Buren has also just been released, attempting to recreate as accurately as possible a lost game that was originally intended for Fallout 3 but was cancelled in 2003.

Newer fans often don’t realize that Bethesda didn’t invent Fallout. It was originally published by the now-defunct Interplay and was itself a spiritual sequel to the 1988 game Wasteland, which recently received a modern sequel.

At the time, the Fallout games were isometric 2D titles and only moderately successful. They were developed by Black Isle Studios, which also no longer exists, but many of whose employees went on to form Obsidian Entertainment – now owned by Microsoft and making this year’s Avowed.

After Fallout 2 in 1998, the plan was to make Fallout 3, codenamed Van Buren, which would still be a top-down game, but would feature 3D graphics for the first time. However, Interplay was not in good shape at the time, and despite much work and planning, the game was cancelled.

Van Buren is finally alive (Nexus Mods)

Instead, the spin-off Brotherhood Of Steel was released in 2004, but not long after Bethesda bought the rights to Fallout. Four years later, Fallout 3 was released.

All of which brings us to today, and the release of a fan mod based on Fallout 2 called Fallout Yesterday – Van Buren, which attempts to recreate as closely as possible what the game would have been like, albeit with only 2D graphics.

You can download the mod for free from Nexus Mods and while it’s not quite Fallout 5 in terms of graphics and technology, it’s the closest you can get to an official sequel for now.

Fallout: London brings the post-apocalypse to Britain

In second place is Fallout: London. While the film still doesn’t have an official release date, it seems like its release is just a few weeks or even days away.

The mod would have been out already if the Fallout 4 next-gen patch hadn’t made the base game more unstable, but fan creators have given up on getting their mod working on the new version and have instead announced that you will need to “downgrade” Fallout 4 to how it was before the patch in order to play the mod.

Once it’s finally done, it’ll be available on GOG, just like a regular game. The creators claim it’ll be nearly as big as Bethesda’s own Fallout titles, making it seem even more like an unofficial sequel.

There are a number of other similar mods planned by various groups, often set in countries other than the US – as Bethesda says its games will always be based in America.

Unfortunately, the Nuevo Mexico mod has been put on indefinite hold after the project lead left. Fallout: Miami still seems to be on track, and if London is a success, it will hopefully encourage more similar projects in the future.

Fortunately, Bethesda is perfectly fine with this and always encourages mods of their games. In fact, they headhunted a number of Fallout: London creators to work on their own games, which is about as good a seal of approval as you can hope for.
