AMD Ryzen 7 9700X 8-Core

Information has been leaked about AMD’s 8-core Ryzen 7 9700X “Zen 5” Desktop CPU. This CPU delivers excellent single-core performance.

AMD Ryzen 7 9700X 8-Core “Zen 5” Desktop CPU Leaks, Hits Nearly 5.6GHz With PBO Enabled

The AMD Ryzen 7 9700X “100-000001404” is designed for the general public and features an 8-core CPU with 16 threads, a base clock speed of 3.8 GHz, a boost clock speed of up to 5.5 GHz, 40 MB cache (1 CCD with 32 MB L3 + 8 MB L2) and a low TDP of 65 W, which is also much lower than the 105 W TDP of its predecessor, the Ryzen 7 7700X.

The Ryzen 7 7700X has a 105W section, while the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X has a 65W section, which is almost half its TDP. That means there’s a slight drop in clocks, with the base clock being -700MHz lower but the boost clock being rated at +100MHz. For the 65W SKUs, AMD recommends using a premium air cooler for optimal performance, but even with such a low TDP, AMD makes sure enthusiasts won’t miss out on any OC and tuning features, as both the Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 5 chips come with all the goodies of the higher-end Ryzen 9 SKUs based on the Zen 5 core architecture.

As you can see in the log above, the CPU was running at a maximum of 5570MHz or 5.6GHz, which is around 100MHz faster than the officially listed boost clock of 5500MHz. This would suggest that the chip was running with PBO enabled, allowing for faster performance than what is possible with the stock spec.

As for performance testing, the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X 8-Core Desktop CPU was also tested on the ASUS ROG Crosshair X670E HERO motherboard, just like yesterday’s Ryzen 9 9900X leak. The platform was running with 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, which is the “1:1: config” sweet spot for Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” CPUs. The chip was put to the test in the Geekbench benchmark.

In terms of performance, the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X CPU scored 3,312 points in the single-core and 16,431 points in the multi-core tests. Again, this is a stunning performance in the single-core tests, with the chip outperforming the Intel Core i9-14900KS 6.2GHz chip by 4% and 14% faster than its predecessor, the Ryzen 7 7700X.

When it comes to multi-core scores, the AMD Ryzen 7 9700X 8-Core CPU delivers an 8% gain over its predecessor. The score is roughly the same as the Core i7-14700 and Ryzen 9 7900, which are 65W TDP configured SKUs and the Ryzen 7 9700X is expected to have the same TDP as well, unless red team opts for a higher 120W TDP, which we reported previously. The CPU doesn’t come close to the Core i7-14700K, which is supposed to be its competitor, but it seems like it proves to be more of a Core i5-14600K competitor in the multi-threaded workloads.

  • Ryzen 7 9700X vs Ryzen 7 7700X (single core): +14%
  • Ryzen 7 9700X vs Ryzen 7 7700X (multiple cores): +8%

For an 8-core CPU, this is a very strong showing, especially the single-core performance which should lead to some nice performance increases in games. Again, AMD Ryzen 9000 “Zen 5” Desktop CPUs including the Ryzen 7 9700X 8-Core are hitting shelves later this month on the AM5 platform, so stay tuned for some action.
