This week’s new set Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races, which starts today, introduces a very unusual event that will see free vehicle setup and tuning come into play for the first time in a long time.
The race, which requires you to use the Suzuki Jimny, will be placed in the Race A slot. This does mean that you won’t see any changes to your Driver Rating (DR) regardless of the outcome – with DR updates disabled – so it gives you a good chance to play around with tuning and settings with little consequence.
There are basically three restrictions: you must use the Suzuki Jimny, it must be equipped with one of the three types of Comfort tires and you must not exceed the Performance Point (PP) limit of 420. Apart from these requirements, you can do whatever you want with your Jimny, including the ‘wide’ body modification and engine swap, with the exception of fitting nitrous.
Once you’ve built the car, you have complete freedom over the vehicle’s settings, and it’s a surprisingly tricky event to get right. The Alsace Test Course rollercoaster plays host to the eight-lap race, and with the banked corner and the big drop and compression after the hill section, your suspension is going to have a lot of work to do.
Another thing to watch out for here is the False Start Check. You have to hold the car still — use the brakes or handbrake — between the time the last start light comes on and all lights go out to start the race. Any movement will earn you a short power limiter penalty, which is annoying at best and at worst causes everyone behind you to get into your slow-moving car…
Race B this week is a standard Sport Mode race, with the main eSports cars from the Gr.3 category taking on each other around the Nürburgring GP circuit for a five-lap sprint.
Apart from the fact that the required tyres are, unusually enough, Racing Medium, there really isn’t much else you need to know before the race. Simply pick your favourite Gr.3 car and head out for a quick spin.
This week’s Race C gives you the rarer chance to take the Gr.1 cars for a beastly race around Interlagos. That was of course the venue for the Manufacturers Cup final at the live event in Montreal last weekend, but you’ll be going a lot quicker in the Le Mans Prototypes (and the like) class.
It is indeed an LMP – and specifically an LMPH – that you want for this race, with the higher downforce of the modern cars and the corner-exit hybrid push making all the difference on the twisty Interlagos circuit. The leaderboard is now full of Porsche 919s, and that will likely show in the race.
It’s a 15-lap run with a mandatory pit stop. That requires you to pit at least once — whether you’re filling up with fuel or tires or not — or you’ll get a one-minute penalty at the end of the race. It doesn’t matter when you make the stop, as long as it’s between the end of lap one and the start of lap 15.
You don’t need to top up or renew your tires, despite the 5x tire wear multiplier and the requirement for Racing Medium tires. But you might want to sacrifice a few seconds (in the endless pit lane) to get new tires, just to improve your lap time at the end of the race.
To access the Daily Races, you must unlock Sport Mode by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single-player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to participate.
