A Delta Airlines plane bound for Amsterdam made an emergency landing in New York City after dozens of passengers were served spoiled food and became ill during the flight.
Delta Flight 136, en route from Detroit, Michigan to the Netherlands, was diverted to JFK Airport early this morning after part of the meal on board was discovered to be spoiled, a Delta spokesperson told DailyMail.com.
Medics found the plane after it landed at JFK and assisted 14 passengers and 10 crew members, all of whom refused medical attention.
Travelers were offered hotel rooms and transportation, a port authority spokesman confirmed, saying everyone was being “rebooked to continue on to their destination.”
The disruption Wednesday morning came as millions of people took to the U.S. skies for one of the busiest travel days of the year. TSA has warned that 32 million people will fly this week for the Fourth of July, adding to the pressure on an already overstretched airline industry.
An apparently frustrated passenger on the plane took to social media to wonder how the airline was going to “get him to Amsterdam today” after they had to divert the plane “because you served passengers ‘contaminated’ food.”

The A330 aircraft, carrying 277 passengers, took off from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport just before 11 p.m. Tuesday evening.
The crew decided to divert to New York after discovering that some passengers had been given spoiled food.
Delta says the crew consulted with medical experts who recommended the diversion.
The plane landed safely at JFK around 4 a.m. Wednesday, where passengers and crew were met by doctors.
“Upon landing, 24 cases of medical assistance were treated, including 10 crew members and 14 passengers. All of them refused to receive medical assistance,” a port authority spokesperson told DailyMail.com.
‘Passengers were offered a hotel room and transportation and are being rebooked to their destination.’
Virginia, who was apparently on the plane, tweeted to the airline after the plane’s emergency landing, saying: ‘I need to know how you are going to get me to Amsterdam today – I am on the plane that is having an emergency landing at JFK because you served passengers ‘contaminated’ food.
‘I don’t need any hotel/food vouchers. I have to arrive in Amsterdam today.’
A spokesperson told DailyMail.com: ‘Delta Flight 136 from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to JFK in New York early on Wednesday morning after it was discovered that part of the meal on board had been spoiled.
‘Medical crews were on scene to meet the aircraft and treat all passengers and crew affected. Delta teams will immediately begin working to gather information about how this incident occurred.
“This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delays during their travel.”
This comes after another Delta plane was forced to make an emergency landing at JFK in April after an emergency slide fell off the plane.
Delta Flight 520, bound for Los Angeles, was diverted to JFK Airport at around 8:30 a.m. on April 26. The plane had been en route for an hour when the strange incident triggered an emergency alarm.
There were no injuries on board the Boeing 767, which was carrying 176 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants at the time.
