Capcom has officially confirmed that they are working on a sequel to Resident Evil Village, adding fuel to rumors of an open-world game.
Resident Evil 9 is now officially in production, and Resident Evil 7 director Koshi Nakanishi has been announced as the director of the new game, whatever it ends up being called.
2017’s Resident Evil 7 was a sort of soft reboot for the series, following the disappointing fifth and sixth installments, and had a much stronger horror atmosphere than this and the subsequent Village. Whether the same applies to Resident Evil 9 is currently unknown.
The announcement was made during a segment in Capcom Next’s showcase on Friday night, but no indication was given as to when the game would be fully revealed or what release date it would arrive on.
“We’re making a new Resident Evil. It was really hard to figure out what to do after 7,” Nakanishi said.
“But I found it, and honestly, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”
At first glance, that doesn’t seem to offer any information, but there are already multiple rumors that the new game will be an open-world game (likely using technology from Dragon’s Dogma 2), which would certainly be a substantial change for the franchise.
Resident Evil rumors have been mixed lately, and it’s hard to tell whether that’s due to bad information or Capcom changing its mind.
The most recent suggestion is that the game is still scheduled for release next year, making a reveal at The Games Awards in December likely – especially as Capcom has used Geoff Keighley events to announce new games on multiple occasions in the past.
As for the rest of the Capcom Next event, there was a lot of talk about the new Dead Rising remaster – which is definitely a remaster, not a remake.
The upcoming Ace Attorney Investigations and Marvel Vs. Capcom compilation also got some screen time, and so does Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess, which is getting a free demo that we highly recommend checking out.
Capcom’s next big release is Monter Hunter Wilds, which is due out next year but doesn’t yet have a release date. That makes it hard to say whether it or Resident Evil 9 will come out first, as the latter nears completion.
Resident Evil 9 could potentially release late next year, but we’d imagine early 2026 is a more realistic release window. There’s no real pattern to the release months for the last few modern titles, though, although Resident Evil 7 did release in January.
