I can’t stop hoping for a Dreamcast 2 and I know how Sega could do this

Could there ever be a second Dreamcast? (Sega)

One reader is left hopeful that a Dreamcast 2 console is finally a possibility, if Sega takes his suggestion to promote its new games.

No matter how many great games and great consoles are released, we gamers can’t help but think of the one that walked away. The sequel that didn’t get made, the remaster that never got made (hello Bloodborne!) or the console they never had as a kid. For me, that console is the Dreamcast 2 and the reason I never got it is… because it doesn’t exist.

It came as a huge blow to me at the time, but the Dreamcast was Sega’s last ever home console. The Dreamcast was cut short by poor sales in its prime and was outgunned by the PlayStation 2. It was underfunded and doomed from the start. However, it is still my favorite console of all time and while, yes, I admit that a lot of that is due to nostalgia, I do argue that it was the perfect blend of Sega’s arcade heritage with modern home console gaming.

The Dreamcast was also innovative, with the first real online service and games like Phantasy Star Online that were years ahead of their time. These days, however, Sega is a shadow of its former self, better known for its stuffy PC strategy games than any classic franchise I associate it with.

However, I had come to terms with the new Sega, accepted that they’re just not the company I remember and was instead hoping for a strange indie-style sequel like the excellent Streets Of Rage 4. Then they announced They made a number of new games based on classic franchises such as Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Streets Of Rage and Shinobi.

Well, to be honest, they didn’t really announce them, they just showed some random footage, went away and didn’t explain anything. There are rumors of reboots, remakes, free to play live service games, maybe all of the above… no one seems to know. There might even be two Jet Set Radio games, according to the latest rumors, so who knows what’s going on.

Whatever it is, there are rumors of a dozen or more other games being revived, including OutRun, Altered Beast, After Burner, and Virtua Fighter, though I imagine that depends on how this first batch does.

Their plans seem much bigger than you would expect from modern Sega and there is also talk of some sort of hub, perhaps something like Assassin’s Creed Infinity should be, where you can access all the games and do achievements and such. But, and here’s my big idea… what if that hub was actually a piece of hardware? The legendary Dreamcast 2.

Obviously you don’t want to force people to buy the console to play the new games, but I would love to see Sega make an official Dreamcast 2, with a new controller, especially to run these games. Maybe even throw in one or two extra ones, as a bonus for buying the console.

The problem is that it would probably be quite expensive, but I hope they can make streaming versions of the games and the console would play them via the cloud so it doesn’t have to be powerful or expensive. Although Sega can probably get away with charging a hefty amount to eager fans.

That’s my idea anyway. It probably won’t happen, but maybe we’ll at least get a controller. At least they can put a Dreamcast 2 logo on there, or call the hub Dreamcast 2, and then my dreams will at least partially come true.
