One Surrey’s pub is battling it out for the title of ‘Best Town Pub’ in the country, against rivals from Kent, London and North Yorkshire. With delicious food, award-winning drinks and unusual events, The Castle in Farnham is the only local pub on the list.
The Castle describes itself as a ‘simple gastro pub’ serving freshly prepared food. Situated in the heart of Farnham, this cozy retreat is suitable for all events from cocktail evenings, coffee mornings to work-from-the-pub afternoons.
Inside, a central skylight and large windows make the dining room light and airy. There is also outdoor seating in a covered courtyard, as well as more private rooms called ‘The Library’ and ‘Market View’. Perfect for organizing dinners and business meetings. There is a team on hand to ensure the event goes according to plan.
The pub said: “Our dining room has a light and airy feel, with a beautiful central skylight and large windows throughout. Step outside into our peaceful, covered courtyard garden; a tranquil oasis from the hustle and bustle of city life.”

A reviewer on Tripadvisor wrote: “I rented one of the castle’s private rooms for my 30th birthday. I was so impressed from start to finish! From the advance communication regarding pre-orders and payment to the day when the room setup was absolutely flawless, I didn’t have to lift a finger. Staff were attentive and professional. Highly recommend.”
Whichever part of the pub you’re in, there’s plenty to choose from. The a la carte menu offers a range of seasonal options and pub classics, while the weekday sandwich menu keeps it simple with five different lunch options with chips or salad.

One thing to look out for might be the Midweek Set menu, where you can buy two courses for £16.95 and three courses for £20.95. Options include beef ragu ravioli and Cumberland pork sausages, as well as the sweeter Crumble pie of the day or Amaretti affogato.
Like a classic pub, they also serve a roast on Sundays, all served with a Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, a selection of seasonal vegetables, rich red wine gravy and all the traditional side dishes. Currently there are options such as tenderloin, pork tenderloin and beetroot Wellington.
This was something one reviewer praised last year, saying: “a great Sunday roast dinner with my family, including a nine year old. The food was superb with great quality roast beef and roast pork. These were accompanied by a very good selection of vegetables and Yorkshire Puddings. The meat was exceptionally tender and all the food was hot, which is great considering it was a very busy service. The portions were good and the meal was great value.”
The pub also hosts events such as Euros Watch Parties and the more unusual Brush Party. An evening to show off creative flair, what you will paint changes every time, with a helpful artist guiding you every step of the way to create a masterpiece. Everything is provided and there is the option to get a drink at the bar while painting.
