Highways England tweeted:
“The A1 southbound is now closed between J73 and J72 Swalwell due to emergency repairs to an infrastructure defect.
“Repairs are already underway, but the road is likely to remain closed during the peak evening period. Please allow additional travel time.”

Traffic jams and long delays on the A1
The A1 southbound western bypass is closed and there are major delays due to emergency repairs from J73 A694 Derwenthaugh Road (Blaydon/Consett junction) to J72 B6317 Hexham Road (Swallow node).
There is congestion on the A1 J77. The entrance ramp at this intersection (J73/A496) is also closed due to emergency repairs on this section.
