Birmingham Airport has issued a travel warning to passengers following reports of early morning queues – with one holidaymaker branding BHX ‘a complete joke’. The flyer took to social media to relieve the queues that snaked ‘around the airport’ this morning, June 18.
It follows a month of travel chaos at BHX and just 24 hours after passengers reported being ‘stuck’ in a two-hour queue to get through security. Airport bosses have attributed the long delays to ongoing construction work at the building.
BHX also warns passengers daily to carry a maximum of 100 ml of liquid in their hand luggage to speed up the queuing process. “Do not put them in plastic bags in your carry-on luggage or remove them at security,” BHX warned.

The airport’s new scanners will eventually allow passengers to take two liters of hand luggage, but last-minute government rules meant holidaymakers were still limited to bottles of just 100ml.
Despite airport bosses hiring another 100 workers to help with delays, many are being asked to show up for their flight times ahead of schedule to ensure they arrive for their flight on time. A passenger flying today asked on social media: “I have to travel for work tomorrow, the flight is at 8:40am and I was told to be at the airport at 4:30am. So ridiculous!”

Two sides of the same coin
A BirminghamLive reader who flew from BHX twice in one week had both a good and a bad experience. Passenger Michael Milton flew from the airport last Thursday morning and told us it took him one hour and 45 minutes to get through security.
However, his experience flying from BHX to Copenhagen on Sunday was much smoother. He said, “I got through security in two minutes!”

Week so far
Fed up passengers yesterday branded Birmingham Airport a “disgrace” and “extremely awful” after reportedly queuing for more than two hours to get through security.
Some claimed they missed or almost missed their flights due to the long wait times.
It appears that queues have shrunk more quickly these days, although passengers still waited outside the terminal building before reaching security.

‘Give yourself enough time’
Passenger Leon Evans, who shared a photo of the queue outside Birmingham Airport, warned passengers this morning to allow “plenty of time”.
He said: “The staff are friendly and do their best, but it is a challenge!”

Future of escalators revealed
A passenger asked BHX this morning when it would reopen the escalators for access to the upper floor.
He added: “Using lifts only on the top floor is a ‘bottleneck’ and was not a good decision.”
He, like many others, wants to know if the escalators leading to security will return.
Well, we have the answer here: Birmingham Airport has confirmed the fate of escalators as construction work draws to a close

Passenger reports parking problem
Someone who dropped off a traveler at BHX this morning reported difficulty finding parking, even in the premium drop-off area.
Bryn called it a “mess” and said: “Not a single parking space to drop passengers off at the premium drop-off car park this morning. If only they had the same system as Heathrow and Gatwick.”

What is causing the delays?
In addition to some confusion over the changes to the 100ml hand baggage rules, many passengers have reported difficulty even getting through security as ongoing construction work at the airport has changed the normal queuing process.
BHX has said: “Our construction work on the new security zone is still ongoing. This means that the security queue is mainly downstairs.
“Please note that all passengers arriving by train must go to the ground floor to queue for safety.”
This change is reportedly part of the reason for the delays. A passenger said yesterday: “This morning there were queues to get from the monorail arrival to the lift. At one point, monorail newcomers had difficulty getting off the monorail due to the queue.
“You then joined another line outside the airport to go back to the same level, in the same elevator, all BEFORE you got to the security queue.”

What is the 100ml rule?
Despite plans to relax restrictions on the 100ml liquid rule for carry-on baggage due to improvements in security technology, the inability to implement these improvements at every airport led to the government changing its guidance at the last minute, delaying the change just over a undone a week ago.
You may only take 100 ml containers in your hand luggage. BHX explicitly states the rules on its website:
- Only liquids, pastes and gels in it containers up to 100ml can be transported in hand luggage; anything larger must be carried in checked baggage.
- No liquids above this size.
- Everything above 100 ml is removed and destroyed.
- There is no limit on the number of containers less than 100 ml that can be worn.
- Containers that can hold more than 100 mlsuch as insulated bottles, are allowed, but must be completely empty.
- Do not put your liquids, pastes and gels in plastic bags (leave these in your hand luggage).
- Do not take them out of your carry-on luggage when you are in the security screening area.
- Leave all electrical appliances in your hand luggage during the security screening.
- If you go through security, please make sure all items are out of the bags including phones, keys, coins and tissues etc. Watches can be left on.
