ForbesNYT ‘Strands’ #105 Hints, spangram and answers for Sunday June 16

Well, Father’s Day has come and gone. I hope everyone had a great time, whether you’re a dad or just have a dad, or even if – maybe especially if – you don’t have one in your life, I can imagine that can be quite difficult one day as Father’s Day. I hope you all had a good day. I like Father’s Day now because my teenage kids always just want to do their own thing, but on Father’s Day (and on my birthday later this week) they have no excuses not to watch movies with me. I miss when they were little and just wanted to spend time with me all the time. It’s funny how we can take that for granted when we’re young parents and overwhelmed.

Ah, enough with the bittersweet. I saw Inside out 2 this weekend and one of the most hilarious parts was the new emotion, Nostalgia, which showed up for a moment before being chased away by the other emotions. “Too early!” they exclaimed. Well, I’m drenched in nostalgia now. Once he has you in his grasp, he will never let you go.

Okay, let’s puzzle this Strands grid, shall we?

How to play strands

The New York Times Strands Puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s currently in beta, meaning it will only survive if enough people play it every day. Keep playing, in other words. It is our collective mission to keep this game alive and on the app!

There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game presents you with a grid of six by eight letters. The goal is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get an idea of what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.

You will also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram connects two opposite sides of the board. Although the theme words are not a proper noun, the spangram can be a proper noun. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.

Strands It’s still not on the New York Times games app, but you can play it here.

Today’s strand distribution

I love board games and have played all of these, although not many of them in a long time. Once I found CLUE, I immediately found the SPANGRAM and everything else fell into place until all I was left with was RISK and PROBLEM. I haven’t seen the ‘R’ for RISK in a long time and it threw me off, but once I did it was easy enough. Of these, I’d say CLUE and MONOPOLY are my favorites, although I’ve enjoyed many a game of SORRY. RISK was always a game I thought I would like more of, but I feel like it needs more depth in its war mechanics to really shine. BATTLESHIP is all dumb luck. TROUBLE is the game I’ve played the least. I have enough problems to deal with in my life.
