The Switch has an extensive library of games covering all kinds of franchises, and while there are plenty of Final Fantasy titles out there these days, there’s one game still missing from this particular series: Square’s massive (and highly successful) multiplayer role-playing game Final Fantasy XIV Online Enix. . Will we ever see it on a Nintendo system?

Game director and producer Naoki Yoshida (also known as Yoshi-P) was recently asked by Easy Allies about the possibility of a Nintendo release and talked about how he eventually wants to see the game available on as many devices as possible. This apparently includes Nintendo’s hardware, and to the extent it develops, the new target could potentially be the Switch’s “successor.”

According to Yoshida, it has been a “dream or goal” for him for a long time to have players play this online Final Fantasy game on each device, and a release on a Nintendo platform in the future is something he would absolutely “love” to see happen. This is exactly what he had to say (via Nintendo Everything):

“My dream, or goal, for over a decade at this point, is for players to be able to play Final Fantasy XIV, regardless of device, and access the servers to enter the same world. …we have been talking about bringing the game to the Xbox platform for years, and so we would of course like to have our title available on the Nintendo platform, and we want to continue our efforts. But it took a long time – with Xbox we’ve literally been talking for years, and it’s finally coming to fruition. We will do our best and continue to work hard and continue our efforts. Ultimately it would be cool, something we would like to explore and make a reality one day.”

Again, it seems that we probably won’t see Final Fantasy XIV Online during this current Nintendo generation. Even if it were to happen, based on certain other releases, it can be locked to select regions or distribution methods, such as cloud streaming. E.g Dragon Quest X Online (a Japan exclusive) and Phantasy Star Online 2 (a cloud release on Switch).

Nintendo has now also mentioned how its Switch ‘successor’ will be revealed this fiscal year, so this comment likely already takes future hardware releases from Nintendo into account.
