Honor’s clamshell phone is finally here, as the Chinese company looks to enter direct competition with Samsung.
As noted by CNBC, the Honor Magic V Flip is a China-exclusive device for now, but that may change as others in its portfolio arrive internationally. More importantly, Honor notes in its press release that the Magic V Flip’s standout feature is its 4-inch cover display. The company has also placed the camera lens cutouts on the left side of the screen, with the intention of making it an easy one-handed phone when closed.
With a resolution of 1200 x 1092, the Magic V Flip’s LTPO cover display can achieve a maximum, smooth refresh rate of 120 Hz. Honor says it has implemented its on-display eye protection technology to help consumers’ eye health.
Users can access around 40 apps on the cover display, including some for games, videos, music, chats and navigation. Such content will be displayed to the right of the camera cutouts, while the left side remains exclusive to the time and other notifications.
Internally there is a 6.8-inch screen with a resolution of 2520 x 1080, equipped with HDR display enhancement technology. Honor adds that the phone’s screen, when unfolded, features 3840Hz ultra-high frequency PWM dimming for additional eye health protection. The Magic V Flip weighs approximately 193 grams and measures 7.15 mm unfolded and 14.89 mm closed.
This makes it slightly thinner than the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and the Motorola Razr Plus (2023).
Modeled after raindrop ripples, the cameras deliver a 50 MP Sony IMX906 primary lens with OIS (optical image stabilization) and a 12 MP ultra-wide array. Honor claims that the ultra-wide lens supports the AI software’s automatic recommendation and super macro switching to capture near and far objects.
The front selfie camera has a resolution of 50 MP with AF (autofocus).
Considering the form factor, users can bend the Magic V Flip 90 degrees for taking selfies. The post states that users will be able to enjoy 4K time-lapse photography and the dual-screen preview.
Unboxing the device highlights Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 SoC. The company says that Qualcomm’s chip is boosted by the in-house RF-enhanced C1 Plus. Honor’s variant improves the performance and ‘communication options’ of the Magic V Flip. Elsewhere, the phone offers a 4,800mAh capacity with 66W charging support.
The Honor Magic V Flip has started accepting pre-orders in China today (June 13) ahead of its launch on June 21. The device is available in two RAM/storage variants: 12/256 GB and 12/512 GB, priced at 4,999 Yuan (~$689) and 5,999 Yuan (~$827), respectively. Consumers in China will find the device in Camellia White, Champagne Pink and Iris Black colorways.
A Magic V Flip “premium” edition also changes its color choice for a jade aesthetic. Honor claims that this version offers 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage for 6,999 Yuan (~$965).
