Sandwiches recalled from hospitals over fears they could cause meningitis

Sandwiches, wraps and pasta salads have been recalled from health care facilities over fears they could cause meningitis.

Real Wrap Company products – which are available at NHS locations – are the subject of a Food Standards Agency (FSA) recall due to possible contamination with listeria monocytogenes.

The ‘do not eat’ warning applies to ready-to-eat foods sold in stores in healthcare settings with expiration dates of June 9 and June 10.

Symptoms caused by the bacteria can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle aches, chills, vomiting and diarrhea.

In rare cases, the infection can be more serious and cause serious complications such as meningitis.

People over 65 years old, pregnant women and their unborn babies, babies under one month old, and people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to listeria infections.

Customers are urged not to eat the foods and to return any affected products to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.
