A great-grandmother, 78, has told how she lost six stone and “totally changed” her life after cutting just one habit from her lifestyle.

Angela Dimmer, from Bristol, weighed 17lbs at her heaviest after losing her husband, John, in 2007, and it was then that she decided she needed to make a change. After drinking a few glasses of wine in the evening, Angela’s health began to deteriorate, causing her to have difficulty walking and to be diagnosed with diabetes.

Now at a healthier weight of 4.5kg, she has been given a new lease on life thanks to a new diet that saw her cut out wine and reverse her diabetes. She said: “I have always been on the bigger side but when I lost my husband the weight kept coming back to me. I started to realize that I couldn’t walk. I was always in pain, and I could no longer walk. I continued this for a long time and eventually I was even diagnosed with diabetes.

“I used to enjoy a drink. Red and white wine were my favourite. I never drank on Mondays as they say you should always have a dry day, but I would enjoy a few glasses of wine any other day of the week, and maybe more on the weekends. I probably ate about four bottles of wine a week. I didn’t eat particularly unhealthy food, but I did eat large portions and treat myself to my favorite takeaways, including fish and chips and McDonald’s breakfasts.

“At my biggest, I had no self-esteem and would buy big clothes to hide my figure. I hated going to stores and not knowing if something would fit me. I was a size 22 to 24, and it was hard to find something I liked. I preferred buying bedding over clothes because at least I knew it would fit. Eventually I realized it was time I did something about my weight once and for all.

“I also decided I needed to lose weight for an upcoming holiday to Dubai as I wanted to be able to put the tray down without my stomach getting in the way. By the time I went in November I had lost three stone, after I started in June with my weight loss plan. At my age it was my last attempt to lose weight, so I decided I would try the Cambridge Weight Plan 1:1 Diet.’

Within the first week of her diet, Angela lost a whopping 8 pounds, and the pounds kept falling off. She says seeing her dress size and weight drop on the scale was a huge boost. Angela added: “Luckily I have good willpower. So when I say I’m going to do something, I just do it, so this means I found it easy to stick to my plan.

“I’ve given up alcohol and no longer eat potatoes or drink milk to stay on track. The diet has completely changed my life. I can now walk four miles three times a week and have joined a gym where I go to aqua fitness classes and circuit training. I have never done this before. I can’t sit for too long now because I feel guilty and I like to walk.
