Care home closed after ‘serious concerns’ about safety.

A home that provided care for people with dementia has been closed due to “serious concerns” about safety.

The Stanholm residential care home for the elderly in Edenbridge has been rated ‘inadequate’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

An assessment took place between January 31 and February 29, with an inspector visiting on Wednesday January 31.

Healthcare professionals had raised concerns about the home’s management leaving people ‘at risk’.

The results of the damming report were published on May 23. The service has been rated as ‘inadequate’ overall.

It is also rated ‘Inadequate’ for being safe and well led, and ‘Requires improvement’ for the categories of effective, caring and responsive.

The Mill Hill-based company is run by Anexas Care Limited and can care for up to 26 people suffering from dementia.

The website states: “Becoming a resident of Stanholm does not mean you have to change the way you live, it is just a change of address, it is your home and part of your identity, filled with your personal treasures and memories.

“Our goal is to create an environment in which our residents really feel at home.

“We provide high-quality, person-centered care in a friendly, family atmosphere. Our fully qualified staff help residents make their own choices about how they live and what they do.”

The report explained that the quality of the facility had deteriorated since the last inspection in April 2022. The CQC had previously rated it “Good” in all categories.

“People living at the service were at risk because potential risks to their health and wellbeing had not been assessed,” the report said.

“When people were at risk of abuse and discrimination, concerns were not recognized and reported to local authorities.

“No measures have been taken to reduce the risk of recurrence of incidents.”

The report goes on to say that the management team was poor and many “did not understand their responsibilities” to manage residents’ health needs.

A further seven regulatory breaches were identified by the CQC – including safe care, safeguarding, management and recruitment.

Despite this, residents of the home said they “felt safe” and that staff supported them to keep fit and be as independent as possible.

They also enjoyed the food and were happy with the cleanliness of their room.

“Although the people we spoke to reported that they were generally satisfied with their care, our assessment found that the care did not meet expected standards,” the CQC said.

Since the inspection took place, a spokeswoman for the regulator has confirmed this immediately prevented new admissions after “serious concerns” about safety.

She said: “Some residents with higher support needs were also transferred to services that better suited their needs.

“We then took action to remove Anexas Care Limited’s registration for the home, effectively canceling the service.

“People who use services must receive safe, effective and high-quality care that meets their needs.”

“They have not appealed our decision. People living on Stanholm were supported by the local authority to move to alternative housing.

“Where this is not happening, we are taking action to improve services, which includes monitoring them closely and may lead to enforcement action if this does not happen.

“Our priority will always be the safety of people using health and social care services.”
