While the Assassin’s Creed Shadows Trophies will grab us when it releases on PS5 later this year, we can see that now The reveal of Assassin’s Creed Shadows caused a spike in the number of players on PS5. It seems like the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game may not have had the best-received trailer, but it’s certainly generated a lot of interest for all the other games in the long-running series – from Assassin’s Creed II Unpleasant Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Assassin’s Creed series flourishes on PS5 after new trailer is revealed

  • Assassin’s Creed Shadows was revealed last week and caused a massive spike in player counts across nine PS5 and PS4 entries
  • As a whole the Assassin’s Creed The number of players in the series increased by 24%

Assassin’s Creed is a hugely popular franchise with 14 games for PS4 and PS5. In nine games in the Assassin’s Creed series saw a 24.4% increase in player count across our sample of 3.1 million PSN accounts, thanks to GameInsights. While it’s not unusual for a new game in a popular series to cause a spike in the previous game, we rarely see one entire franchise see a spike in the number of players like this.
Here’s each Assassin’s Creed game in which the number of players increased, along with the exact percentage that each game won over the past week (from Sunday, May 12, 2024 to Sunday, May 19, 2024) after the reveal of Assassin’s Creed Shadows on May 15, 2024. The Assassin’s Creed games below are ranked from highest total number of players to smallest.

Game Increase in the number of players
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla +14%
Assassin’s Creed Mirage +46%
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey +19%
Assassin’s Creed 2 +29.7%
Assassin’s Creed origins +24.5%
Assassin’s creed black flag +16.2%
Assassin’s Creed Liberation +32.1%
Assassin’s Creed unit +27.2%
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate +29.6%
Assassin’s Creed villain (not counted in total) minimum +1.3%
Increase in the average number of players (corrected for sample differences) +24.4%

As you can see, during the week in which Shadows was revealed, all games saw significant player increases. In particular, Assassin’s Creed Mirage had the biggest increase as the number of players grew by 46% and it has the second most players of all Assassin’s Creed game now. As I said in my Assassin’s Creed Mirage review, it’s a lot shorter and more concise than the RPG entries, which could make it easier to dive into.
While Assassin’s Creed villain may have seen the least growth of the games mentioned above, but this is mainly due to the limitations of our data sample. Our sample only includes the top 500 PS5 and PS4 games – AC villain failed to make the cut last week. For the sake of accuracy, we therefore excluded this from the overall percentage. However, we have included it above as the secret tithe Assassin’s Creed game where the number of players increased because it is worth playing Remastered version on PS4 if you have the chance!

With a larger number of players then Villain, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla experienced a growth of 14% week after week. The player count was already substantial enough to reach 51st position in the top 500 of PS5 and PS4 games, so this 14% increase in player count represents a pretty big increase in player count. Interestingly enough, it seems so Brotherhood, Revelations, Assassin’s Creed IIIand the Chronicles games were set aside in favor of the other nine games in the series.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the Assassin’s Creed series has been on sale since May 9, 2024. However, we didn’t see a big spike in player counts in the first week of sales, so the sale itself didn’t cause the jump. In fact, we saw the opposite reaction: in most games dropped active players when it went on sale. The exceptions were Assassin’s Creed II, Black flagAnd Liberationall of which saw a small increase in players the past two weeks in a row.

The other games in the series fell in the week ending Sunday, May 12, 2024, and rose significantly and unanimously in the week ending Sunday, May 19, 2024 – the week the Assassin’s Creed Shadows PS5 trailer dropped. So while the sale may have facilitated the increase in player numbers, it is clear that the revelation of Assassin’s Creed Shadows played the biggest role in bringing players back to the series.

But what do you think of all the data? We’ve previously reported that Assassin’s Creed Mirage’s player count dropped more in one month than the rest of the series, but this event seems to be breathing some new life into it! So let us know in the comments and let us know what’s on your mind and I’ll see you there with the TrueTrophies team!

  • When an account opens a game, it is recorded as a game being played. Accounts can only register a game once per week.
